Setup

Once the official release is ready, this will be much easier....for now, here’s how you get polyface setup:

1.

Download the installer here:

2.

Download the supporting files here

3.

Run the installer

Once the installer finishes, it will launch polyface.

4.

Close polyface by pressing the Windows key on your keyboard, and then right-clicking the polyface icon that looks like this:

...and selecting “Close.”

5.

Unzip the supporting files.

6.

Open windows explorer by pressing the WindowsKey + E on your keyboard

7.

Navigate to:

C:\Users\[YOURUSERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\polycade\

8.

Inside the polycade folder, rename the "img" folder to "img-old":

C:\Users\[YOURUSERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\polycade\img

to:

C:\Users\[YOURUSERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\polycade\img-old

9.

Once the unzipping is finished (Step 5), move the "emulators", "games", and "img" folders from the Supporting Files into the \polycade directory (Step 7). When you're done, your polycade directory should look like this:

10.

In your explorer window, navigate to:

C:\Users\[YOURUSERNAME]\AppData\Local\Programs\polyface\

11.

Right click on polyface.exe

12.

Select “pin to Start menu”

13.

You can now launch polyface by clicking on the icon in your start menu.

Making polyface your default interface

If you want your Polycade to boot up and open polyface, this is how you do it:

1.

Complete Setup (section above)

2.

Open windows explorer (WindowsKey + E)

3.

In your explorer window, navigate to:

C:\Users\[YOURUSERNAME]\AppData\Local\Programs\polyface\

4.

Right click on polyface.exe and select “create shortcut”

5.

Leave this explorer window open, we’ll use it again soon.

6.

On your keyboard, press the WindowsKey + R

7.

In the window that pops up, type “shell:startup” and press enter

8.

A new explorer window will open. Drag the shortcut you created into this Startup folder.

9.

If you see Steam in the Startup folder, leave it there.

Updating Steam Settings

Polyface can launch the Steam games that are installed on your machine. In order for this to work, you need to change some of Steam’s settings:

1.

Open Steam

2.

Navigate to "Controller Settings"

3.

Change your checkboxes to match the checkboxes shown in the screenshot below:

4.

Go back one screen to the Settings page by pressing the leftmost red button on your Polycade, or clicking the back icon in the top left corner.

5.

Select “Interface”

6.

Make sure “Start Steam in Big Picture mode” is disabled.

Adding games

There are several ways to add games in polyface:

Steam

Polyface automatically searches your machine for installed Steam games, and loads them into your browsing interface. Polyface should also automatically download the correct image for your game (although you may have to restart polyface for the image to show up).

ROMs

You can additionally use polyface to manage and launch your ROMs. We currently support emulators for a number of retro systems (see image below) as well as arcade games (via MAME). In the future, you will be able to add additional emulators and console types. See below for instructions on adding ROMs.

In order to add ROMs, simply drag and drop them into the appropriate directory in your polycade\games folder:

1.

Open Windows Explorer (WindowsKey + E)

2.

Navigate to:

C:\Users\[YOURUSERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\polycade\games

3.

Drag your ROMs into the appropriate directory. For example, if you have a ROM for an NES game, you would drop it into the "nes" folder.

4.

Relaunch polyface in order to have it pickup the new ROMs.

Adding Images for your ROMs

Polyface includes images for a handful of ROMs. We're working on setting up an automatic image scraper, but until then it's possible to add your own images.

Currently, this must be done individually for each ROM. Here’s how you do it:

1.

Open Windows Explorer (WindowsKey + E)

2.

Navigate to:

C:\Users\[YOURUSERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\polycade\img\

3.

Open the folder that corresponds to the ROM’s system (i.e. for a “Super C” ROM, you’d open the “nes” folder)

4.

Create a new folder. Name this folder the same as the game name, following these rules:

A.

Locate the game name:

I.

If the game is an arcade game (i.e. MAME ROM), you’ll need to launch polyface and take note of how the games title shows up.

II.

If the game is a console game, then you can use the filename of the ROM.

B.

Remove any text in between ( ) and [ ]

C.

Remove all special characters except for "&" , “-” , and “_”

D.

Remove any extra spaces so that every space between words is only a single space.

E.

The resulting title is what you should name the new image folder.

5.

The game thumbnail image should be 460x215, and should be a jpg file. Place this into the folder you created, and name the thumbnail file “header.jpg”

6.

Polyface should now pick up the image for your ROM.
